Post-Treatment Instructions for Root Canals

After undergoing root canal therapy, it’s essential to follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and protect the treated tooth. Mild discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity is common after the procedure but should subside within a few days. Following the post-op care guidelines will help you recover quickly and avoid complications. Please read through the following instructions for a smooth recovery process.

  • Avoid Chewing on the Treated Tooth: Refrain from chewing on the side of the mouth with the treated tooth until the numbness completely wears off. This will help prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue and avoid unnecessary pressure on the tooth.
  • Sensitivity: It’s normal to experience some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure for a few days following the procedure. If the discomfort continues beyond a few days or becomes severe, please contact our office.
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth as usual, but be gentle around the treated tooth. Avoid disturbing the temporary filling, if present, in the first 24 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods: For the first few days, avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods (such as nuts, gum, or caramel) that could put additional pressure on the treated tooth or cause damage to the temporary filling.
  • Manage Pain and Swelling: Mild pain and swelling are common following root canal therapy. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage these symptoms. Apply an ice pack to your face for 15-20 minute intervals to reduce swelling. If the pain persists or worsens, contact us.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Be sure to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure the treated tooth is healing properly and to complete any necessary restorative procedures, such as placing a permanent crown or filling.

Root canal therapy is designed to save your tooth and relieve pain, but it’s important to avoid habits that can damage the restoration, such as teeth grinding or chewing on hard objects. If you experience any prolonged discomfort or have any questions about your recovery, please don't hesitate to contact our office.
