Post-Treatment Instructions for Dental Fillings

After receiving a dental filling, it's important to follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and the long-term success of the filling. You may experience some temporary discomfort, but with proper care, your tooth should heal quickly and the filling should last for many years. Below are essential aftercare tips to help you manage the recovery process.

  • Avoid Chewing on the Treated Area: Avoid chewing on the side of the filling until the numbness wears off to prevent accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
  • Sensitivity: Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common after getting a filling. This should fade within a few days. If the sensitivity continues or worsens, let us know.
  • Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss your teeth gently around the filling area for the first 24 hours. After that, continue with your usual oral hygiene routine, being careful not to disturb the filling.
  • Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods: For the first 24 hours, steer clear of hard, sticky, or chewy foods (like gum, caramel, or hard candy) to avoid disturbing the filling while it sets.
  • Manage Pain: If you feel any discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers can be used as directed. If pain persists or feels unusual, contact us for advice.
  • Follow-Up Care: If you feel that your bite is uneven or the filling feels high, contact us to schedule a quick adjustment.

Fillings are designed to restore the function of your tooth, but it’s important to avoid behaviors that could harm the restoration, like teeth grinding. If you have any concerns about your filling or experience prolonged discomfort, please don’t hesitate to contact our office for assistance.
